Winter in the Netherlands is full of cozy traditions, and a great time to enjoy new experiences, both at work and in your free time. Whether you’ve been here for years or recently arrived, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are five practical tips to help you make the most of the season.
1. Check your vacation days
Winter is a popular time to visit family abroad, so make sure you know exactly how many days you have available. Planning ahead ensures you won’t miss out on important holidays, or risk leaving it too late to request time off.
People on a full-time contract with InAxtion, are entitled to a minimum of 20 statutory vacation days per year. If you recently started working for us, the number of paid vacation hours you receive depends on what you’ve accumulated so far. The more you work, the more these hours gradually build up.
Unsure how much vacation time you’ve built up? Check your payslip or ask your InAxtion consultant. It only takes a minute and helps you avoid any surprises when planning time off.
2. Additional winter vacation time
Some InAxtion contracts include additional non-statutory vacation days, depending on your agreement. During the winter holidays, certain days are paid automatically as part of the InAxtion contract:
- 25 December – Christmas Day
- 26 December – Boxing Day
- 1 January – New Year’s Day
3. Things to see and do in winter
Winter in the Netherlands offers plenty of things to see and do. These are perfect for weekend trips, if you want to discover more of the country during the darker months:
- Christmas Markets: Visit the cozy Royal Christmas Fair in The Hague or explore the famous underground caves of the Valkenburg Christmas Market, known as ‘Europe’s best Christmas town’.
- Rotterdam Markthal: This popular market is where you can try dishes from all over the world and warm up with something new. Find out more
- Unique Museums: The interactive human-body museum CORPUS Leiden is an impressive experience and perfect for a cold day indoors.
4. Take care of your home this winter
Cold and damp weather can lead to issues like mold, drafts, and higher energy costs. Regular winter maintenance helps keep your home comfortable and safe. Check for proper ventilation, clean heating vents, and keep an eye on moisture levels, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. A little prevention now can save a lot of trouble later on!
5. Don’t expect much snow
Although everyone dreams of a white Christmas, Dutch winters are generally mild. Snowfall does happen, but not very often. When there is snow, it doesn’t usually last long. Most of the season brings rain, wind, and cloudy skies, so keep a warm waterproof jacket handy and expect some wet commutes.
