Understanding Your Rights To Social Security When Working In The Netherlands

Moving to a new country for work is a big step. Whether you’re an electrician, mechanic, or plumber, one thing matters just as much as your job itself: security. In the Netherlands, that security comes from a strong social system that supports you when you need it most.

An overview of the Dutch social security system

If you work in the Netherlands with a Dutch employment contract, you automatically become part of the national social security system. This system is designed to protect employees financially in different situations.

At InAxtion, all employees are hired under Dutch contracts. This ensures you are fully included in the Dutch system, rather than relying on arrangements in another country.

That includes:

  • Old age contributions (AOW)
  • Unemployment benefits (WW)
  • Disability benefits (WIA)
  • Sickness benefits (ZW)
  • Pension Fund (StiPP)

This means that if your project ends, or you are temporarily without work, you may be entitled to state support. It also means that while you work for us, you’re building a pension pot for your future.

Contract types and corporate policy in the Netherlands

Not all workers in the Netherlands are employed in the same way. There is an important difference between:

  • Posted workers: Employees who temporarily work in the Netherlands but remain insured in their home country.
  • Employees with a Dutch contract: Workers employed and insured in the Netherlands.

InAxtion only offers Dutch employment contracts. This means your taxes, social contributions, and rights are all handled in the Netherlands, giving you full access to the system and avoiding confusion about where you are covered.

Eligibility for social security benefits

To access certain benefits, you usually need to have worked in the Netherlands for a minimum period. For example, unemployment benefits (WW) are only available after meeting specific work requirements. Your contract type also matters:

  • Flexible contract: You may be eligible for unemployment benefits by the state between projects
  • Permanent contract: Your salary is paid by your employer when you are temporarily without work

Beyond the core system, there are additional benefits available depending on your situation:

  • Healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) to help cover health insurance costs
  • Child benefit and child-related budget for families
  • Daycare support (kinderopvangtoeslag), often covering part of your childcare costs
  • Rent allowance (huurtoeslag), covering part of your costs by renting a house yourself

Employees are also protected in case of illness. In the Netherlands, you continue to receive income for a certain period of time under conditions, if you are unable to work due to health issues, which is not always the case in other countries.

Mandatory requirements for InAxtion employees

To fully access the Dutch social security system, there are a few essential steps to take. For example, without health insurance, you cannot access the healthcare system. Ensure you:

  • Register for a BSN (citizen service number)
  • Set up a DigiD for official communications
  • Arrange Dutch health insurance

InAxtion can help you arrange these things, making the process easier when you start working for us.

Supporting you at every step

Working abroad should feel like an opportunity, not a risk. That’s why InAxtion supports you not only with employment, but also with understanding how everything works, from registration to benefits.

Many international workers assume they are still covered in their home country, or are unsure about their contract type. This can lead to missed benefits or confusion about rights. With a Dutch contract through InAxtion, everything is clear: you are part of the Dutch system, with all the protections that come with it.
