Helder Fernandes has been part of the InAxtion family since 2003. Originally from Portugal, he has built a solid and respected career as an electrician across Europe. We sat down with him to hear more about his journey and what it’s like working with InAxtion for over two decades.
When did you arrive in the Netherlands?
I was born in Portugal, where I also completed my education. I started my career there as an electrical technician and then worked abroad – two years in Germany with Siemens, and three years in England with Vauxhall. Also, I came to the Netherlands around 1998 because I already knew a few people here; I’d also worked briefly in the north of the country back in 1996. It felt like a good place to build a life. Eventually, I decided to stay.
What kind of work are you doing now?
Right now, I’m working through InAxtion for a company called ATM, part of the Renewi Group. My job is in maintenance and electrical installation. I work with motors, PLC systems, and do full electrical assemblies. If there’s a major repair needed, I take care of it. I enjoy that the work is complete – we build, install, and maintain the systems ourselves. I like to work directly and independently, and this role suits me very well.
How did you adapt to the Dutch language?
When I first came to the Netherlands, the language was difficult. I tried going to language school once, but didn’t stick with it at the time. Now I’m taking it more seriously – I go to language school twice per week to improve my Dutch reading, writing, and speaking.
This is important because I want to move into a management role. I’m also taking planning management courses, both online and in person. That’s the good thing about InAxtion: if you don’t have the right training – especially the safety certificates – they will support you in obtaining them. They’ve definitely helped me develop my career.
Tells us about your experience of InAxtion
I’ve been working with InAxtion since 2003. I can honestly say I’ve always been happy with them. The communication is clear, the payments are correct, and they’ve supported me whenever I needed help – especially in the beginning when things were more difficult. If there’s ever a problem, I talk to them, and we find a solution. I never had a reason to leave – they treat me with respect, and I do the same in return.
How has your life developed here in the Netherlands?
Over the years, I’ve lived in four different parts of the Netherlands. I’ve had my own houses and also lived in company accommodation. Right now, I’m staying in a company house, but I’ve applied for a new place and expect to move soon. I have my own car, so transport has never been a problem. InAxtion always helped with the logistics, they provided a lot of extra support early on when I was just getting started.
Would you recommend InAxtion to other technical workers?
I recommend InAxtion to anyone who is serious about their work. If you are professional and committed, InAxtion will treat you fairly and help you build a future here. I’ve seen people take the opportunity seriously and succeed – just like I have. For me, InAxtion has been a very good company, and I’m proud to still be working with them. That’s why I’ve been here more than 20 years!
