If you work as an electrician – or in any other technical role – safety is a key part of the job. Dutch workplaces take health and safety seriously, and understanding the rules helps protect you, your colleagues, and your future opportunities.
Safety starts before you arrive on site
Before starting a new project, you receive clear information about the work, the risks involved, and any safety requirements. At InAxtion, workplace safety information is regularly reviewed and updated to make sure employees receive the most important details in a clear and practical way. If anything is unclear, it’s important to ask questions before you begin: understanding safety instructions is just as vital as having the right tools for the job.
In the Netherlands, you need a VCA certificate – Veiligheid, Gezondheid en Milieu Checklist Aannemers – to work in many environments. While this certification is not always applicable, here at InAxtion we prefer all our employees to have it before starting work. If you do not already have a VCA certificate, InAxtion can help you prepare for the exam, often in your own language.
VCA training helps you to:
- understand Dutch safety regulations
- use equipment safely
- know which personal protective equipment (PPE) is required
- increase your awareness of workplace hazards.
Get safely equipped for work
Safety rules vary from site to site, but they should always be followed. Safety inspections are strict, and ignoring safety requirements can lead to removal from the worksite. The right equipment is essential for safe working conditions.
Depending on the project, you may need specific tools, protective clothing, helmets, safety shoes, gloves, or other PPE. InAxtion checks that you have suitable equipment before you begin work. For certain industries, such as petrochemical projects, special insulated tools may be required.
Some equipment is available from InAxtion through a deposit system. As an employee, you can use company equipment during your employment and receive your deposit back when the equipment is returned according to the agreed conditions.
Speak up about safety concerns
If you see something unsafe, report it. Whether it’s damaged equipment, unsafe working conditions, or unclear instructions, raising concerns helps prevent accidents.
Always, speak to your foreman or supervisor in the first instance. You can also contact your InAxtion consultant. For serious incidents or safety issues, InAxtion’s safety coordinator will be informed and can help ensure the matter is properly addressed.
Remember, safety is everyone's responsibility. Reporting a concern is not complaining; it is helping to create a safer workplace for everyone.
